Harvard Business School Archives

The HBS Archives contain records that document the history of Harvard Business School, faculty, research, teaching, and the student experience. The collections date from the establishment of the school in 1908 through the present day and document the development of the case method, changes in curriculum, the intersection of the school and innovations in business, and the global impact of HBS, among other research areas.

Faculty collections document the history and global impact of the school’s research and teaching and provide insight into the evolution and impact of business theory and education. The faculty collections contain course materials, such as cases and course syllabi, case preparation materials and drafts, writing and research notes, research data, lecture and seminar notes, and professional correspondence.   

The HBS Archives, mandated by Harvard University, is responsible for acquiring, preserving, and making available the records of HBS that have permanent legal, fiscal, and/or historical value.  These include school publications, paper files, photographs, oral histories, video, film, and digital materials.

    Alfred D. Chandler Papers

    Professor Alfred Chandler defined the field of business history. His extensive collection includes his lecture and seminar notes and almost the entire body of his professional correspondence.

  • Army Air Forces Statistical School student portrait on the steps of Baker Library

    Wartime Schools Collection

    During World War II, the U.S. military was facing an increased need for officers trained in statistics and supply chain logistics. The HBS Archives holds records related to many wartime schools held on campus.

    Industrial Film Collection

    A range of industrial films including time-motion studies and demonstrations of manufacturing shop processes. Includes films produced by HBS for teaching topics like labor relations and management.
