Dillingham Collection, 1912-1915
On April 24, 1913, a Boston Chamber of Commerce trade delegation embarked from Boston Harbor on a three-month voyage to South America. The construction of the Panama Canal was nearly complete, and the delegates expected “to prepare themselves for this expected trade stimulus by personally learning the needs of the people of Latin America and their methods of doing business.” Herman L. Dillingham, the 26-year-old secretary to the delegation, collected these snapshots and souvenirs of the trip, which visited Panama, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. Highlighting the emergence of Latin American markets, this collection is an important new addition for Baker Library.
