Life Sciences: R&D spending, pharma manufacturing cost

Where can I find R&D spending and pharma manufacturing cost data in life sciences industries, such as biotech, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals?

Bloomberg

  • Type BI in the search box to locate R&D spending data

Capital IQ

For a particular public company’s R&D expenditure:

  • Type in the company name in the top search box

  • Select “Income Statement” under financial s/Valuation in the left column

  • Locate “R&D Exp.” Under the Supplemental Operating Expense Items section on the table

To screen R&D expenditure within the industries:

  • Select “Screening” tab at the top tool bar > Companies to open the Screen Builder

  • In the first column of the Screen Builder, select “Industry Classifications” in the Company Details bucket > select “Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology and Life Sciences” > click <Add Criteria>

  • Select “Financial Statements” in the Financial Information bucket > Income Statement > R&D Expense > specify the details as needed > click <Add Criteria>

  • You can combine any criteria listed in the Screen Builder as needed.

Cortellis

  • The search interface is user-friendly

  • Accessible in the library only

Statista

  • Provides quick tables/charts in life sciences data such as pharma or biotech R&D expenditure, or pharma manufacturing cost

  • May begin a search using the Research AI tool
