Company databases: which database to choose?

Which company database should I use?

We subscribe to several company databases; each has its particular strengths.  You may choose one versus another to suit your purpose: individual company analysis, private vs public company info, company equity research, company profiles, histories, etc.

Bloomberg

Availability: In-Library for Authorized Baker Visitors*

Strengths/Unique Features: Comprehensive platform used to analyze financial data from equity and fixed income markets, and public and private companies. Real time data. Excel plug-in.

CB Insights

Availability: HBS intranet

Strengths/Unique Features: Coverage of early stage companies/deals.

Capital IQ

Availability: HarvardKey

Strengths/Unique Features: Auditable financials, sophisticated screening, PE and VC companies and funded firms, who knows whom. Earnings call transcripts, key developments. EMIS

Availability: HarvardKey

Strengths/Unique Features: Current company information from more than 500 sources for emerging markets in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Orbis

Availability: HarvardKey

Strengths/Unique Features: Global company database is unique in the extent of companies covered as well as the availability of private company financial information. Particularly strong for non-US companies.

Pitchbook

Availability: HarvardKey

Strengths/Unique Features: Coverage of early stage companies/deals. Strong valuation information. Morningstar equity research and cash flow models available within the 'Research Center' module.

Preqin

Availability: HarvardKey

Strengths/Unique Features: Information on private equity and venture capital firms, funds, private companies, and deals. Subscription includes access to Preqin reports.

LSEG Workspace

Availability: HBS intranet; In-Library for Authorized Baker Visitors*

Strengths/Unique Features: Comprehensive platform including company financials, financial markets data, ESG data, and investment analyst reports.
