Batterymarch

Interview conducted in February 2001
Chapters

Dean LeBaron, HBS 1960, was working for an investment services firm when he became interested in cutting-edge economic theories about portfolio management. One insight that captured his imagination was how computer models based on complexity science could be applied to portfolios to spread risk across many stocks with particular characteristics. He launched Batterymarch to bring these concepts to real-world investing and was among the first to use computer models to manage investment portfolios. Dean was also in the vanguard in Latin America, the former Soviet Union, and China when investment opportunities opened there. He talked about his wide-ranging ventures in a video interview at his home in New Hampshire in February 2001. Interviewer: Amy Blitz, HBS Director of Media Development for Entrepreneurial Management.
