Finding Resources

Baker Library Historical Collections maintains numerous tools for locating the books, serials, archival and manuscript collections, photographs, and other materials in its holdings. Detailed information about the department's collections is available here. If, after using the resources listed below, you are unable to locate materials, please contact the Baker Library Historical Collections reference staff.

HOLLIS+ Catalog

HOLLIS+ includes everything from the Harvard collection, like books, journals, maps, archival materials, videos and music. Most Baker Library Historical Collections materials are cataloged and available here.

HOLLIS+ also includes an enormous articles database, which has content from subscription databases and journals, along with open access content, like articles from the Harvard open access repository DASH. HUID/PIN login may be required to view certain materials.

General, Advanced, and Browsing searches are available and results can be further refined through facets, including limiting to Baker Business materials.

For more tips on using this discovery tool, see the HOLLIS+ Help page.

HOLLIS Classic

Baker Library Historical Collections materials can still be located by searching HOLLIS Classic, the Harvard University Libraries' online catalog. Most Baker Library Historical Collections materials are cataloged and available here.

For a targeted search, choose the Expanded Search option, and then to select the relevant search fields from the accompanying pull-down menus.

  • Enter your search terms and then choose the appropriate field from the accompanying pull-down menus.
  • "Keywords from: Anywhere" is the default search.
  • To limit the search to only Baker Library materials, choose "Baker Business" under Locations.
  • To limit the search by format (Manuscripts, books, journals/serials, etc.), select from the choices under Format.

There is also the option to limit to Language, and to search within a specific Year Range.

For more searching tips, see the HOLLIS Classic Help page.Read about the features at Which catalog should I use?, or watch some brief videos comparing the two resources.

Finding Aids

Most manuscript and archival collections have a finding aid, or collection inventory, that provides more detailed information about the collection, including a list of the boxes and volumes contained in the collection. Since collections vary in size from one volume to hundreds of boxes, the finding aid will help you narrow down the portions of the collection that are relevant to your project.

A growing number (but not all) of detailed manuscripts and archives finding aids are available through Harvard's Online Archival Search Information System (OASIS).

You can browse the Baker Library Historical Collections materials available through OASIS here by choosing "Baker Library, Harvard Business School" under Limit by Repository and clicking the Go button.

To search for specific Baker Library Historical Collections materials on OASIS:

  • Enter your search terms and then choose the appropriate field from the accompanying pull-down menus.
  • "Keywords from: Anywhere" is the default search.
  • To limit the search to only Baker Library materials, choose "Baker Library, Harvard Business School" under Limit by Repository.

For more searching tips, see the OASIS Tips on Searching page.

A small number of finding aids for Business Manuscripts collections are not included in OASIS, but are available by subject or alphabetical listings on the Baker Library Historical Collections Web site.

Finding aids not yet available online can be sent electronically to researchers upon request. For more information or to request copies, please contact the Baker Library Historical Collections reference staff.

Some collections are stored off-site and must be ordered 2-3 days in advance, so researchers will either need to consult the collection finding aid in the Baker Library Historical Collections Reading Room or obtain a copy before visiting in order to determine what specific collection materials to order.

A search for archival or manuscript collections can start in HOLLIS+. To limit your HOLLIS+ Catalog search to archival or manuscript collections only, refer to the "Refine My Results" list that appears to the left of your search results. Under "Resource Type," select "Archives/Manuscripts."

Visual Materials

Baker Library Historical Collections holds a rich collection of photographs, prints, engravings, trade cards and other images. A growing number (but not all) of these visual images have been digitized for online searching through Harvard University's Visual Information Access (VIA) system.

To search for Baker Library Historical Collections materials in VIA:

  • Enter your search terms and then choose the appropriate field from the accompanying pull-down menus.
  • "Anywhere" is the default search.
  • To limit the search to only Baker Library materials, choose "Baker Library, Harvard Business School" under Limit Repository To.
It is also possible to search VIA for general categories of materials. Some popular collections for searching include:

For more searching tips, see the VIA Tips on Search Queries page.

Independent photograph collections, photograph albums, and manuscripts collections with photographs are cataloged in HOLLIS+, and finding aids, or collection inventories, are available.

A search for images only should start in the VIA system. To expand search results to all available materials related to the search term, including items available in VIA, use HOLLIS+. To limit your HOLLIS+ search to images only, refer to the "Refine My Results" list that appears to the left of your search results. Under "Resource Type," select "Image."
