Exchange rates: current & historical

Where do I find current and historical exchange rates?

Finaeon: Daily and monthly exchange rates for many different countries, in some cases going back hundreds of years.

  • Log in Anonymously.  For frequent use, create an account for a personalized experience

  • Expand GFDatabase menu (default)

  • Select a country or region, e.g., United States.

  • From the Filter by Series Category menu, select Exchange Rate.

  • Click Search.

  • For trade weighted indices for Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and U.S., in Step 4, from the Series Type menu, choose Exchange Rate Indices.

Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve Statistical Release - Foreign Exchange Rates:  Exchange rates against the U.S. dollar and several countries back as far as the 1970s in some cases.

Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Economic Data (FRED) - Trade-Weighted Indexes:  Daily, weekly, and monthly trade weighted indices back to 1973.

Onanda Currency Converter:  Current and historical exchange rates for different currencies.

Bank of International Settlements:  Daily and monthly effective exchange rate indices.

Bloomberg

  • For current and historical currency exchange rates use the Security Finder function. Type SECF and hit GO. 

  • Select "Currencies" from the Category drop-down menu, then the "Spots" subtab.

  • Click a currency to load the ticker and display a menu of related functions, such as the Historical Price (HP) and the Line Chart (GP) functions.

  • For the best and worst performing currencies relative to a selected currency use the World Currency Ranker.  Type WCRS and hit GO.

  • See the Currency Market Sector for other currency information.  Hit CRNCY (Yellow key), then GO.
