Business ownership and demographics

Where can I find data on U.S. businesses?

U.S. Census Bureau:

  • The Survey of Business Owners (SBO) provides the only comprehensive, regularly collected source of information on selected economic and demographic characteristics for businesses and business owners by gender, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.

  • The Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs (ASE) supplements the 5-year Survey of Business Owners (SBO) program and provides more timely updates on the status, nature, and scope of women-, minority-, and veteran-owned businesses for three reference years (2014 – 2016).

  • Annual Business Survey - The ABS Program combines data results from survey respondents and administrative records to produce data on business ownership. The survey is collected from employer businesses and the non-employer data are compiled from administrative records.

  • County Business Patterns has data for the United States as a whole, by county, zip code, and major metropolitan area.

  • Business Dynamics Statistics includes measures of establishment openings and closings, firm start-ups, and job creation and destruction by firm size, age, and industrial sector.
