The pile of a rug as it comes off the loom is slightly uneven and must be sheared. Long chains of rugs are sewn together and fed into this machine, like a gigantic lawn-mower, which shears the pile to the correct height. Three sheerings are necessary to produce the smooth, velvety appearance of the finished fabric.
