This collection documents the business and civic activities of Eli Goldston (1920-1974), President and CEO of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates of Boston, Massachusetts, from 1961 to 1974. The collection includes materials on family social policy, on Goldston's social activism, as well as on Elaine Goldston's social activities. Office correspondence and public relations materials offer a window into the range of women's roles in the corporate world in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Women at Home and Abroad > Social, Political, and Cultural Activities
Goldston was a prominent spokesman for corporate social responsibility. As such, he wrote numerous letters and speeches about social policies, including corporate financing of inner-city housing, the Federal Family Assistance Act of 1970, and gender equity in corporate boardrooms.

In addition, the collection contains photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other materials on Goldston's diverse cultural and charitable interests, in which his wife, Elaine Charlotte Friedman Goldston, played an important role.

Women at Work: Professional Labor > Other Professionals
Papers regarding Goldston's financial support and fundraising for women in the arts include correspondence with painter Corita Kent, who designed the Boston landmark natural gas tank on the Neponset River for Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates, and Elma Lewis, Director of the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts in Roxbury. The collection also includes a large amount of correspondence between Goldston's public relations associate, O. F. "Ozzie" Ingram, and women writers, editors, and publishers, who were involved in publicizing Eli Goldston's civic activities. Goldston's office staff, most notably his administrative assistant, Lily S. Wilson, his secretary, Sally Quigley, and Margaret Maher (secretary to O.F. Ingram), is quite visible throughout the collection.
