Volume 1

The volume begins with the genealogical and autobiographical notes of James Morris Whiton, a New England merchant. After he had recorded his family history, he continued the book in diary form. Much of the diary discusses family life, including the death of his young daughter, Lucy.

James Morris Whiton died in 1847, but his widow, Mary Elizabeth (Knowlton) Whiton, continued the diary. She began writing in the volume in 1874 and continued until 1906, when she was 97. Elizabeth Whiton mainly wrote about the important events in the family, such as births, deaths, graduations, and marriages, but she also described travels around the Northeast, current political events, and church matters. The volume is a rich account of five generations of the Whiton family.
