William Appleton and Company records

The business records of Boston, Massachusetts shipping merchant William Appleton and Company and successor firm Samuel Hooper and Company, 1813-1889.

The collection represents the extensive records of a company of shipping merchants who traded with all parts of the world and includes lists of imports from Calcutta, 1831-1848, and the letters and accounts for Martin Murray & Co., who acted as agents for William Appleton & Co. in Bombay.

Includes information related to Isreal Whitney of Beverly, Mass. who made a number of voyages to Calcutta.

Records of Boston merchants engaged in foreign trade

Multiple collections related to Boston merchants engaged in foreign trade, 1739-1887.

Of particular interest is the William H. Goodwin collection, which contains accounts of goods shipped by William H. Goodwin on ships from Calcutta bound for Boston. The commodities dealt in were gunny cloth, jute, twine, rugs, silks, Buffalo hides, shellac, senna, castor oil, saltpetre, and indigo. The firm name in Boston was Weld & Goodwin, a partnership between Goodwin and John Gardner Weld.
