The Forbes Family Collections contains letters to and from various female members of the Forbes family, including letters written from Boston before and during the American Revolution, and nineteenth-century letters written in Rio de Janeiro and Canton, China. The collection also includes an 1838 marriage contract between Sarah Perkins and Henry R. Cleveland.

Over 200 letters belonging to Dorothy Murray Forbes and her father, James Murray, are from various members of the Murray family, including correspondence with Jame's sister, Elizabeth Murray, a merchant in Boston in the mid-1700s. Letters contain family news and information about the Revolutionary War in Boston (James Murray was a loyalist). Many of the letters are typescripts, but some are originals.

Another part of the collection contains 186 letters written to Valeria (Wright) Forbes, the wife of Paul S. Forbes. The correspondence mainly comprises family letters, the majority being from her husband before and after their marriage in 1835, and others from her sisters-in-law and from her family. Valeria Wright and Paul S. Forbes met, married, and first lived in Rio de Janeiro. After their marriage, she accompanied him to Canton, China, but they also lived in Baltimore, Maryland. The family lived in Paris for many years, beginning in the 1840s.

The collection also contains the 1838 indenture or marriage settlement between Henry R. Cleveland and Sarah Perkins (a minor), stipulating that of her inheritance from her father at age twenty-one, $30,000 will be paid to Henry as his own property. Beyond that sum, the inheritance will be given over to a trust. Income from the trust shall benefit Sarah Perkins free from the control of any husband. When Sarah dies, the money will be disposed of in a way to be determined in her will.
