The volume was originally an account book kept by a farmer in Oxford, Massachusetts, between 1787 and 1822. At the end of the nineteenth century, a young girl used the blank pages in the volume to write stories and make drawings. The book includes three stories, all written in the same hand. The last one is signed Maggie McDonnell, 14 years old. The stories are short romances. The longest is called "An Old Time Christmas."
Drawings throughout the book are mainly images of women in late nineteenth-century costumes.
