Pontoosuc Woolen Manufacturing Company produced blankets, carriage robes, cassimeres and flannels in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, from 1825 until it was taken over by another company in 1924. A continuous series of employee accounts from 1887 to 1924 indicates that at least half of the factory workers were women.

The account books (identified variously as time books and payrolls in the finding aid) include name, time and production records, wages, and deductions for rent and board. The earliest volumes in the series do not include job titles, but later volumes give precise pictures of who did what in each room of the factory. For instance, Volume 45 states that in March, 1921, the overseer, weavers, dressers, and yarn carrier in the designing room were all men, but all the drawers-in were women.
