This collection consists of the work sheets for Robert G. Layer's 1952 Harvard Ph.D. thesis, entitled "Wages, earnings, and output in four cotton textile companies in New England, 1825-1860." Layer culled the raw data for his numbers, later published in Earnings of Cotton Mill Operatives, 1815-1914 (Cambridge, MA: Committee in Research in Economic History, 1955) , from a number of Baker Library manuscript collections of textile mill records. The sheets contain detailed information from payrolls, including, specifically, women's payrolls, from 1828 to 1891.
Boston Manufacturing Company payrolls (women only), 1844-1865 Hamilton Manufacturing Company payrolls (women only), 1832-1886 Dwight Manufacturing Company payrolls (women only), 1865-1890 Lawrence Manufacturing Company payrolls (women only), 1834-1891 Nashua Manufacturing Company payrolls (women only), 1828-1869
