Ledgers of a general store in Ashfield, Massachusetts, record accounts with numerous women. They appear producing hats for store credit, as well as for selling eggs, cheese, and butter.

As these accounts cover a long period of time (from 1824 to 1879), one can follow the change in the transactions. While the palm-leaf hat industry changes dramatically and almost dies out in the 1860s, the women continue to bring their eggs and dairy products to the store for credit.
