Catalog Record
Mss 543 1931-1944 A939

The Automobile Industry Photograph Collection consists of approximately 2000 black and white photographs from the period 1931 to 1944. The photographs depict manufacturing activities, plants, officials, exhibits, the Second World War work of numerous automobile manufacturers, publicity stunts, events, and awards as well as promotional material to introduce various makes and models of automobiles.

In some photgraphs, women, models or celebrities, are posed to introduce new or special features. Among the photographs promoting the war work of the industry, many depict women war workers. Captions promoting the automobile or its special features accompany the photographs.

One photograph from the Chrysler Corporation, for instance, illustrates war work at the Dodge plant. The caption reads:

PIN-UP GIRL FROM DETROIT

Proof that not all the pin-up girls come from Hollywood is evidenced by Marie Gonzales, a WOW--Woman Ordinance Worker--at the main plant of Dodge Division, Chrysler Corporation. Marie adds more than her beauty to the war effort, by skillfully preparing wiring harnesses for military vehicles.
