Sarah Curtis was a single woman who owned a dry goods store in Hampden, Maine, between 1862 and 1866. The first volume of this collection consists of a bill book detailing her purchases from various suppliers, mainly in Bangor, Maine.

The names of the wholesale merchants from whom she bought goods include F. Meinike of Bangor, Thompson and Highborn of Bangor, Mutual Store Co. of Bangor, and Nathan Wood of Portland. The items she purchased for her store included stationery, cloth, needles,trimmings for dresses and hats, soap, scented oils, dyes, herbs, syrup, raisins, sugar, coffee, eggs, gloves, purses, corsets, and photograph albums.

The second volume of the collection is a day book detailing her personal and store expenses. Sarah also kept the accounts of Rebecca S. Curtis in this book. Sarah's expenses included rent and board paid to Rebecca, charitable donations, and wages paid to male and female employees.

She also documented her profits and losses from the store.
