Historical Note:

James B. Tuttle, son of James and Eliza (Jones) Tuttle, was born ca. 1850 in Acton, Massachusetts. The Tuttle family, one of the oldest families in Acton, was prominent in business and civic affairs for generations. His father owned a dry goods in the center of Acton for much of the nineteenth century. James and his wife, Florence, lived on a farm in the town of his birth for almost sixty years.

Scope and Content:

Collection consists of six volumes pertaining to Tuttle Farm, Acton, Massachusetts. Expenses are for personal, household or farm items; income generally from sale of agricultural produce or stock dividends. Most volumes contain list of income or expenses with no mention of individual or corporate names. Description of each follows:

Volume 1 - "James B. Tuttle", March 30, 1883-March 29, 1889, 144 pp. Entries are chronological by month with itemized expenses and income in separate columns. Included is date, description of item or service, dollar amount of income or expense. Names mentioned usually include last name with first initial.

Volume 2 - "James B. Tuttle, Acton, Mass, April 1, 1889"-February 1898, 215 pp. Cash book which includes principal, entries by month with expenses on left hand page and income on right hand page. Each page includes type of goods or service purchased or sold and amount. No dates except month and year; volume contains few corporate or individual names.

Volume 3 -"James B. Tuttle, Acton, Mass, April 1, 1898"- August 1904, 153 pp. Cash book which includes monthly entries with expenses on left hand page and income on right hand page. Each page includes type of purchases or sales and amount. No dates except month and year, volume contains few corporate or individual names.

Volume 4 - "James B. Tuttle Journal", September 1904-June 1913, 217 pp. Journal which contains chronological monthly income and expenses for Tuttle Farm. Entry includes month, day, year, type of goods or services, amount. Income and expenses on same page for September 1904; thereafter, expenses on left hand page and income on right hand page.

Volume 5 - July 1913-May 1919, 132 pp. Journal which contains chronological monthly income and expenses. Entry includes month, day, year, type of goods or services, amount. Page 130 contains stocks owned by Florence M. Tuttle and James B. Tuttle. Page 131 lists Liberty Bonds purchased. Page 132 lists bank accounts for Florence and James Tuttle. This volumes contains quite a few names of persons; also it shows the increasing dependence on investments, not sale of farm produce, for income in non-harvest months.

Volume 6 - June 1919-December 1925. Journal listing chronological monthly expenses on right hand page and income left hand page. Entries include month, day, year, type of goods or services, and amount. First page includes amount of bonds registered to Florence and James Tuttle. Majority of income from stocks and sale of apples.
