Otis Sherman, son of Aaron and Sarah (Kimball) Sherman was born in Westborough, Massachusetts on July 19, 1786. He married Abigail Wilson on March 21, 1812 in Westborough and the couple had seven children: (1) Benjamin Franklin, b. August 20, 1813; (2) Dennis, b. January 20, 1816; (3) Eliza, b. October 26, 1818; (4) Otis, b. February 7, 1821; (5) Abigail, b. March 15, 1824; (6) Horace, b. March 14, 1827; and (7) Sarah, b. October 23, 1831.
According to a note attached to the inside cover of the account book, Sherman resided in Barre and Grafton, Massachusetts before moving to Fletcher, Vermont in the 1830s. The Vermont census of 1850 lists Otis and Abigail Sherman living in the home of their son, Dennis, in Fletcher.
Scope and Content:
Collection consists of one volume of farm accounts kept by Otis Sherman, 1823-1846. Titled "Otis Sherman Account Book" on the inside front cover, the book contains a two page index. Majority of entries concern sale of farm products, hiring of farm labor, hiring of horse and wagon or oxen, shoemaking and tailoring. Names mentioned include Haven Spooner, Daniel Bacon, Timothy R. Hinkley, Charles R. Lamb, Samuel Hinkley, Moses Byden, Nathan Perry, Barnabus Sears, David Lee, Seth Perry, John A. Fellows, Dean Babbitt, Addison Paige, Captain James Smith, Abner S. Clark, Josiah Wilson, Lyman Carroll, Ambrose Chase, and Gardner A. Paige.
Also included in collection are five documents: notice of meeting of school district [Otis Sherman appointed district clerk], n.d.; account current for Benjamin Wilson, December 1839; bill for Elizabeth Wallace from David Allen, 1819, and letter to John Sherman from L. A. Archambauld, 1896.
