Captain Jonathan Nye was born in Dartmouth, Massachusetts in 1762. He served in the Revolutionary War and married Hannah Mandell on January 18, 1784; the couple had twelve children. Captain Nye in the Oxford section of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and maintained a farm in that town. A portion of his farm was purchased in the 1850s for use as the Riverside Cemetery. In addition to his agricultural pursuits, he was a ship master. Captain Nye died November 18, 1815.
Scope and Content:
Collections consists of one volume kept by Jonathan Nye from 1796-1816; title on front cover states "No. 1". Entries are for farm products, farm labor, drawing wood, horse hire, cartage, etc. Payment was made in farm work, mowing, dressing hogs, etc. Names mentioned in volume include Richmond Brothers, Solomon Williams, Gabe Swift, Mary Nye, Jabez Sherman, ship Calomny, Salvenas Bartlett, Jonah Jenne, Benjamin Sesson, John Howland, Reuben Swift, Bradford Williams, William Taber, Philip Hathaway, Ellery Tompkins, Abraham Wheeler and Joseph Taber.
A good portion of the volume has newsclippings pasted over accounts. A note with gift states this volume also contained a "key to code used by Gideon Nye, Vice Consul to China". The code document was removed and placed in the Gideon Nye, Jr. manuscript collection. [Gideon Nye was a great uncle of the donor].
