Samuel and Ebenezer Joy

Mss: 1

Historical Note:

Samuel Joy, son of Samuel, was born in Durham, New Hampshire on November 4, 1738. The Joy households, located in the Durham area, along with other families who settled nearby, formed a neighborhood which eventually became known as the "Joy Prairie". Deacon Samuel, so called because he held that position in the local Congregational church, lived on his father's farm all his life. Deacon Samuel married Hannah Meader of Wolfboro on January 18, 1767, and the couple had ten children. He died in Durham on October 31, 1824.

Ebenezer Joy, son of Deacon Samuel and Hannah (Meader) Joy, was born May 30, 1785 in Durham, New Hampshire. A farmer like his father, he was the third generation to live in the "Joy Homestead" which was located in the Packer's Falls district. In 1815, Ebenezer married Nancy Watson; the couple had five children. He died June 8, 1827. He had left the family farm to his oldest daughter. The property remained in the family throughout much of the nineteenth century, but eventually passed out of their hands in 1882.
