John Jones, son of Alden and Mary Jones, was born July 16, 1797 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. By 1826, he lived in Charlestown, Massachusetts where he worked at a variety of jobs. These included haying, hoeing, planting, carting coal and ice, selling beef, potatoes and onions as well as freighting flour and codfish. Jones married Mrs. Eliza (Holman) Ingalls of Charlestown, a widow with three children, on June 16, 1829.
Scope and Content:
Collection consists of one account book kept by John Jones from 1826-1850. Entries contain date, name of individual, type of transaction, amount spent or received. Names mentioned include: Guy Adams, Loomis Wood, Henry Hubbard, Samuel McCrea, George Sumner, Samuel Bosworth, David Holton, Jacob Amsden, Mary Williams and Silas Mack. Phonetic spelling throughout volume. Also included is a recipe for "Nitro-Muriatic acid" written in pencil on inside back cover.
