Joseph Heald, Jr., son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hobart) Heald, was born in Pepperell, Massachusetts on January 8, 1786. An enterprising farmer, Heald charged handsomely for both farm produce and his labor. Apparently, his prices did not deter individuals from doing business with him-he was already writing in his second account book at age twenty-two. In addition to his agricultural pursuits, Heald did a brisk business in transporting people and items locally as well as to surrounding towns such as Claremont, Dedham, St. Dunstable, Boston, Concord and Harvard.
Heald married Sally Nutting on December 28, 1809. He died in the town of his birth in 1813.
