Robert Getchell, son of Joshua and Phoebe (Gray) Getchell, was born in Wells, Maine on July 24, 1771. He continued to reside in the town of his birth where he farmed his land, worked on farm implements and boats, cut wood and sold fish and farm produce. He married his first wife, Priscilla Littlefield, in 1795, or there about; the couple had nine children. In 1818, he married his second wife, Lydia Maxwell; they had ten children. Robert Getchell died on April 11, 1854.
Scope and Content:
The collection contains one volume of accounts kept by Robert Getchell, 1815-1821. The bulk of accounts mentions agricultural labor and products which Getchell sold or bartered in exchange for goods and services. He notes dates of transaction, description of activities, names of individuals involved and amounts charged. Accounts include William Bennett, Joseph Getchell, Samuel Chadbourne, George Bennett, Daniel Littlefield, Moses Williams, Isaiah Getchell, Daniel Goodwin, Nicholas West, Betty Gilpartrick, Nahum Morrell, Jacob Williams, William Lord and John Cain.
