Historical Note:
George J. Abbot was a teacher and State Department official (A.B. Harvard, 1835). He taught school in Washington, D.C., 1837-1850; headed the Consular Bureau, State Department, 1852-1864; was the American Consul at Sheffield, England, 1864-1870; and taught at Meadville Theological School, 1871-1876.
Scope and Content:
Collection consists of a letterbook, Nov. 1869-1870, containing copies of outgoing letters kept by Abbot while he was the American Consul at Sheffield, England.
Provenance : Gift of Richard Appel, 1960, from the estate of Mrs. Edgar Nichols, who was Julia Abbot.
