The origins of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation can be traced to 1900, when Thaddeus Beal, William R. Beal, and John Wilkie bought two electric and gas companies. These two companies served approximately 5,000 customers in Newburgh, New York. At the time, it was unusual for a company to reach beyond the economic activity and commerce of the city into a sparsely populated rural region.
Over the next couple of decades, the company grew through consolidations, mergers, and acquisitions. The Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation was officially formed in 1926.
