Julio Werthein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1918. In 1935, he went to law school but interrupted his studies to devote himself to Hoteles Werthein S.R.L. In 1959, he was appointed representative before foreign banks by Banco El Hogar Argentino. Between 1964 and 2000, he was senior vice president of and shareholder in Banco Mercantil Argentino. From 1991 to 2008, he served as president of the Inter-American Council of Commerce and Production. From 2002 to 2005, he was president of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange. Since 2005, he has been honorary president of Grupo Werthein, which engages in farming operations, insurance, communication, industrial and real estate activities. Until his death on September 22, 2013, Mr. Werthein held numerous influential positions, including president of the Argentine-Chinese Chamber of Production, Industry, and Commerce; vice president of the Argentine Chamber of Commerce for Asia Pacific; honorary president of the Inter-American Council of Commerce and Production; and vice-president of the Fundación Caja de Ahorro y Seguro S.A. Throughout his long business career, he received many awards for his civic and business achievements.
