Augustine Heard, Jr.,
Old China and New
In 1894, Augustine Heard, Jr. wrote his reflections on the China trade to be presented to the Mercantile
Club in St. Louis. Augustine describes American business with China from the early days in the 1840s
through its most prosperous period in the 1850s and 60s, and makes astute observations on the reasons for
the decline of many of the large American trading houses in the 1870s.
