Question: Where can I find social responsibility ratings of companies?
Answer:
  • The Socrates database rates the largest 3,000 U.S. companies along several dimensions.
    To create a list of companies in a certain industry based on criteria such as diversity or employee relations:
    1. Click the Queries tab.
    2. Under the area for HBS Harvard Business School's Queries, click New.
    3. Name the query (description is optional). Click Save. Then click Advanced.
    4. In the Field drop-down list choose Industry or Sector (for broader scope).
    5. Under Value, choose desired Industry or Sector in drop-down list and click Add Clause. Add only 1 at a time.
    6. Scroll down to Qualitative Topics. Choose Strengths (positive) or Concerns (negative, e.g., Workforce Reductions; 15% or more in the last year) based on criteria to identify. (For descriptions, go to the Home tab and in the area for Updates and Downloads select Ratings Definition.)
    7. Click OK at the top or bottom of the screen to return to the Query Attributes screen.
    8. Click Run to see list of companies matching criteria.
    9. Choose Edit the query to change the criteria or Export Companies to export the list.
  • Corpwatch.org monitors companies actions in light of social responsibility.
  • Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes companies on social responsibility credentials.
  • Data Center Impact for Social Justice produces reports and lists other web sites that monitor corporations actions.
